Frequently Asked Questions

Where did the name Asterismos originate from?

In Greek the word asterismos means to ‘mark with stars’ or ‘arrangement of constellations. Furthermore, it is the etymological root of the astronomy term asterism, meaning a smaller division of a larger constellation.

As a student of Physics, we often experience a link to the Greek language, as a number of Physics symbols are borrowed from the Greek alphabet. Therefore, the name for this blog, Asterismos, felt like an ode to both the constellations and a nod to the contributions of ancient Greece to the world of Physics.

Why do you write about Astronomy?

Whilst studying Phyiscs at university, I was lucky enough to take an astronomy module. As a part of this module we took a trip to the small Canary island of La Palma, which has one of the world’s largest collections of observatories and some of the clearest sky available anywhere on the Earth.

As a result of undertaking this module I developed a passion for Astronomy. Once I had finished this paticular module, | continued to read about Astronomy and learn more about the subject as it contiued to fascinate me. Eventually I decided to start this blog to share my knowledge and passion for the subject with likeminded individuals.
